Q. hondae has hung onto life through dry years, but refuses to increase in size without extra water. Young shoots were killed in the April frosts of 2021 and 2022.

Acorns ovoid-elliptic, to 1.5 × 1 cm, about ¼ to ½ included in the cup, ripening the second year.

Shaun Haddock found trees of this species near shrines on Kyushu and Shikoku, Japan, - one of which, said to be 300 years old, he described as the ‘biggest in the world’ of this species at 40 m tall and 1.7 m diameter.
